About

James Lucas is a British/New Zealand Oscar-winning writer and director. After graduating from film school at London Metropolitan, being a Writer/Researcher at Talkback Television, Music Composer for commercials, and an Assistant Editor at Tank Magazine, Lucas worked for Ridley Scott at RSA Films for twelve years (which he considers the finest film education possible).

In 2013 Lucas wrote and produced a short film called ‘The Phone Call’, with director Mat Kirkby and starring Sally Hawkins and Jim Broadbent. It went on to win over 20 international film festival awards, including ‘Best Narrative Short’ at Tribeca Film Festival. In February 2015, Lucas won the Oscar for Best Live-Action Short Film for the film.

Most recently he wrote and directed his debut feature ‘Moss & Freud’ – a dramatized account of Kate Moss sitting for the master figurative painter Lucian Freud. Starring Ellie Bamber and Sir Derek Jacobi (and Executive Produced by Kate Moss, herself). It premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and Rome Film Festival to acclaim, receiving 4/5 stars by Alexandra Shulman for the Daily Mail. Shulman gave Kate Moss her first Vogue cover as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue UK.
